Selecting a coach
CIPD research has demonstrated that the market is 'swamped' with coaches and that buyers of coaching are looking for guidance. For coaching to be effective it's really important that the 'chemistry' works between the coach and the client. Also important is that the coach has the appropriate skills and expertise for the coaching assignment. Following are some tips on coach selection:
- Meet at least three coaches as it's important to get the right 'fit' for the individual and the organisation.
- Ask the number of hours coaching experience they have and over what period.
- Is the coach qualified and to what level?
- Are they a member of a coaching organisation?
- Do they engage in supervision and how often?
- Ask for references and results achieved
A professional coach will willingly supply this information.
